There are already seventy seven 20mph speed limits and/or zones across the BCP area. Evidence from our road safety data over a ten-year period showed there was on average a 40% reduction in casualty collisions in these areas.

In the time it takes a car travelling at 20mph to stop, a car travelling at 30mph would still be doing 24mph. When someone is hit at 30mph, they are around five times more likely to be killed than when hit at 20mph.

In April 2024, the council approved the capital budget (not from Council Tax) used to deliver 20mph schemes. Officers have assessed the casualty data across the BCP neighbourhoods to prioritise them. Based on this analysis the area covering Winton and surrounding areas, including parts of Charminster, Moordown and Talbot Woods, is the first area selected.
