Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council’s Waste Team is drafting our Waste Strategy for 2026 -2036. This strategy will guide our waste services over the next ten years. We aim to develop a sustainable, effective, and efficient waste management plan that meets the needs of residents, businesses, and government requirements.
Our strategy is built around a set of ambitions and we would like to hear your thoughts on our areas of focus and ambitions, and also understand your needs.
By participating in this questionnaire, you will help shape a strategy focused on reducing waste, encouraging reuse, increasing recycling rates, and promoting sustainability.
Thank you for taking the time to share your views and suggestions.
Ambitions:
Engage and enable residents and businesses to reduce waste and recycle more - Supporting residents and businesses with education, campaigns, and services that encourage reuse and repair.
Effective and efficient waste collections -Design waste collection systems that use resources efficiently, reduce environmental impact, and provide cost-effective services.
Sustainable waste disposal - Dispose of waste in ways that protect the environment, save resources, and use new waste management technologies. Also, manage waste near where it's created to cut down on transportation and related environmental costs.
Modern infrastructure -Improving our waste sites to maintain efficient waste collection and disposal facilities.
Model the circular economy and apply the waste hierarchy - Keeping items in use for as long as possible, encouraging the cycle of reuse, repair and recycling, to prevent waste and extend the life of everyday items. Then manage waste in order of environmental benefit: reduce, reuse, recycle, energy recovery and disposal.
Sustainable waste targets - How we collect and dispose of waste contributes to carbon emissions. The Council aims to run carbon neutral operations by 2030 and make the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area carbon neutral before 2045. We also need to meet the Government’s waste targets to recycle 65% of our waste and send less than 10% to landfill by 2035.
Futureproof and safe services -Make sure our services follow new government laws and safely run our waste sites and collection services according to permit rules.
