Smart Place Strategy

Shape the future digital solutions that could be used to improve how we live, work, and connect.

We have an ambition to transform into a 21st century digital council by investing heavily in technology and improving how we deliver your council services.

In addition to this, we are also developing a wider Smart Place programme. This is all about harnessing and embracing technology within our local area to provide digital connectivity, applications and services to people and which supports our economy and environment. We want to develop digital solutions that best serve our communities here in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

By putting the local place at the centre of our plans, we can provide a broader and richer set of new innovative services for our residents that go beyond those services traditionally provided by councils.

For example, if you’re going out for dinner, you may want to check out the most popular restaurants, make a restaurant booking, organise your travel to and from the venue online all in one place. That’s just one of the things as a Smart Place we want to enable

So, what are we doing?

We are currently putting together a strategy which brings together the things we want to achieve in our area through Smart Place. Whether making it easier for people to go about their daily lives, improving the prospects of our local businesses or enabling communities to function more effectively - information, data and digital technologies will play an ever-increasing and important role. Typically, our programme will:

  • use local information to promote local services, such as jobs, restaurants, accommodation, taxis and events
  • create exciting augmented reality experiences to attract visitors back to the high street
  • make available affordable ‘smart devices’ to help people to live independently in their own homes for longer (whether or not currently receiving council support)
  • provide a real-time updated website showing local air quality
  • accelerate the roll-out of high-speed networks to provide much better digital connectivity for local businesses
  • create new opportunities for local businesses to innovate with digital technologies.

What do we want to achieve?

Our ambition is to make Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole the UK’s leading Smart Place, helping to attract major private investment that enables us to create and retain more value in the local economy, greatly benefitting the whole community by:

  • creating digital solutions to improve local people’s lives
  • supporting local businesses
  • attracting new companies and digital leaders to the area
  • protecting our environment and supporting sustainability.

As part of our Smart Place programme we will create an industry-focused digital hub and open innovation ecosystem. This will enable new creative, impactful technologies to be developed and grow.

Where do you come in?

We know that real value is only generated when we focus upon delivering solutions that benefit our people, communities and businesses.

We want to focus on doing the things that matter to local people and businesses and that’s where we need your help prioritising what we do and how we do it as part of our place-based approach.

Have your say and help shape our future Smart Place digital solutions that could be used to improve how we live, work, and connect.
