What is a School Street?

A School Street is where the road outside a school is closed to motor vehicles for a short period (45-60 minutes) at the beginning and end of the school day. Parents and carers are asked to either walk, scoot or cycle with their children to school, or to park a little further away and walk the last few minutes of the journey. Older children are encouraged to travel independently wherever possible.

School Streets have been very effective elsewhere, by:

  • Reducing road danger at the place where the most children and their families are likely to congregate;
  • Improving the air quality outside the school, protecting young lungs;
  • Encouraging physical activity into the children’s routine, which makes them healthier, happier, more energised and ready to learn.

How will it work?

Part of Hadow Road will be closed via a timed Traffic Order, displayed on signs at the entrance to the road. During the closure periods, stewards will be present to help enforce this, and to welcome families arriving at the School Street on foot, scooter or bicycle. Blue Badge holders and residents will be allowed through in their cars if required.

The map below shows the location of the school street and route information.

Have your say

We ran a pre-consultation survey between 8 July and 5 August 2024 for parents, local residents and local businesses to share their views on the proposed School Street on School Lane. The results showed strong support for the scheme and it has therefore been decided to proceed with the trial.

Following on from the pre-consultation, the trial closure for the School Street will begin on 14 October 2024, with the council undertaking a review 6 months after this implementation date. To share your views on this School Street, complete our survey(External link) from 14 October. This survey helps us to understand the impact of the closure on school journeys as well as local residents. While the survey is available from the start of the trial, we would recommend waiting a few weeks before completing it, to allow the changes to settle in and better understand the longer-term impact that the closure might have. The survey will be open for 6 months. Comments received by midday 14 April 2025 will be considered as part of the review.

The trial closure is subject to an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). To formally object to or support the closure becoming permanent, please visit the ETRO page.
