Home to School Travel

Have your say on our draft Home to School Travel Policies

The consultation has now closed. Thank you for taking part.

We are reviewing our Home to School Travel policies and would like to hear from children and young people, parents, carers, schools and anyone with an interest in Home to School Travel.

There are two draft policies because different legal duties and travel assistance arrangements apply to each group:

This consultation is an opportunity to tell us whether the draft policies are clear, easy to understand and whether there is anything we should change before they are finalised.

We would also like to understand what impact an increase in the post-16 financial contribution would have on learners and their families.

Have your say

Please read the information about the policies and complete any of the surveys you are interested in.

Children and Young People's Survey - a survey for children and young people to share their views and experiences about travelling to school or college.

Children of Compulsory School Age - find out about the proposed changes to the policy and complete the consultation survey.

Post-16 Learners - find out about the proposed changes to the policy statement and complete the consultation survey.

You can watch our Home to School Travel Support Webinar to learn more about the proposed updates to BCP Council's Home to School Travel and Transport Policy for Children of Compulsory School Age and Home to School Travel Policy Statement for Post-16 Learners.

The consultation runs from Midday Tuesday 8 September until Midday on Wednesday 7 October 2026.

How to take part

You can take part by:

  • completing the online surveys
  • downloading a copy of the survey from the relevant page
  • requesting a paper copy at your local library
  • contacting us by email at passenger.transport@bcpcouncil.gov.uk

What happens next?

Following the consultation, all responses received will be carefully reviewed and considered. We will analyse the feedback, including any concerns, comments and suggestions raised, and use this to help inform the final policy proposals.

We will publish a summary of the feedback received, along with the council's response and any proposed changes to the policies resulting from the consultation on this page from 8 December 2026. A report will be presented with the final policies to Cabinet for a decision on 16 December 2026.
