Public EV charging

In July 2019, BCP Council declared a climate emergency, with acknowledgement that climate change is a serious risk to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s future. Since then we have been working alongside the wider community to look at how early the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole region can be made carbon neutral, ahead of the UK target of 2050.

An essential part of moving towards a zero-carbon future is decarbonising the transport sector, which would ideally be achieved by reducing car travel and achieving modal shift in favour of public transport / active travel. We recognise that this modal shift is not possible for every journey or individual, particularly in parts of the BCP Council area with limited public transport provision, and so transitioning to use of zero-emission vehicles is also important. Replacing existing petrol or diesel vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) is a key part of BCP Council’s Climate and Ecological Emergency action plan to help achieve our climate change and air quality goals. In addition, The UK Government has introduced a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030 which will speed up the transition to EVs. By 2030 it is estimated that EVs could account for up to 44% of all cars and vans in the BCP Council area.

We believe that availability and access to public charge point infrastructure is a key barrier preventing people's transition to EVs, particularly for individuals without off-street parking at home. By adopting a Public Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, BCP Council is demonstrating a commitment to promote the use of electric vehicles across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole in line with the Department for Transport (DfT) Decarbonising Transport; A better, Greener Britain vision. Across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, our vision is to create a reliable and accessible public electric vehicle charging infrastructure network for residents, businesses and visitors and to contribute to making the area carbon neutral before 2050. As part of this vision, we want to ensure delivery of local charge points is carried out where they are needed.

Have Your Say

If you own, lease, drive or have an interest in electric vehicles or chargepoint infrastructure, we want to hear your views.

We are interested in finding out the scale of EV ownership and prospective ownership across the area, demand for local charge points, interest in community EV charger sharing and interest in community car club electric vehicle hire. We also want to know where you would like to see publicly available EV charge points installed and where you would like to see the electric community car club vehicles located across the conurbation. This will provide an evidence base to help develop our strategy and shape where charge points are installed in the future to help meet demand.

You can get involved by:

  • Reading our strategy summary which details priorities, opportunities and actions for delivery of public EV infrastructure
  • Completing our online survey
  • Adding a pin to our map below for each location where you would like to see publicly available EV charge points
  • Adding a pin to our map below for each location where you would like to see community car club electric vehicles located

Alternatively you can take part by requesting a paper copy of our survey at any BCP Council library. If you require information in an alternative format to complete our survey (such as large print or an alternative language), please email researchandconsultation@bcpcouncil.gov.uk

The deadline for engaging with our survey and posting pins on our two maps is 11.59pm on 1 October 2023.

Public EV charger locations

7 months

The UK Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund supports local authorities in England to work with the chargepoint industry to improve the roll out and commercialisation of local charging infrastructure, with a focus on planning and deliverof charge point infrastructure for residents without off-street parking. BCP Council has been allocated capital funding from this to deliver a step-change in the deployment of local, primarily low power, on-street charging infrastructure and to accelerate the commercialisation of, and investment in, the local charging infrastructure sector.

Map key:

  • Current and soon-to-be delivered BCP public charging points are shown in orange
  • Identified sites for possible installation of publicly available EV chargers using LEVI funding are shown in purple on the map
  • Identified sites for possible LEVI mobility hubs are shown in light blueA Mobility hub is a highly visible, safe and accessible space where public, shared and active travel modes are co-located to improve access to and connectivity between sustainable travel modes. Mobility hubs can provide opportunities to incorporate public realm improvements and enhanced community facilities. For more information on what a mobility hub might look like, please refer to our strategy summary document.

We are interested in finding out where you would like to see other public EV charge points like those in orange and purple installed across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. This information will help us to install additional charge points in areas where they are needed, using LEVI funding.

Please drop a pin to show us where you would like to see other EV charge points by following these instructions:

1. Click below to open the map

2. Once opened, you can zoom in and out, and drag to move around the screen

3. To add a pin click the + button on the left-hand side - there is an option for car EV charger or van EV charger. Drag and drop a pin onto map and add a comment if you would like to add any additional detail. You can only add pins within the BCP Council boundary.

4. Please note: everything you put on the map is accessible to others, so it is encouraged not to reveal any personal information.

5. Please also give us your views through our online survey

Electric car club vehicle locations

7 months

Community car clubs such as Co-wheels in the BCP area allow you to hire a car as and when you need to, for as little as 30 minutes. Making use of community car club vehicles can replace some car journeys or the need for a personal vehicle entirely and electric vehicle car clubs offer low carbon, flexible use vehicles without the need for vehicle ownership. Membership of the BCP Co-wheels scheme permits members to book and use Co-wheels cars anywhere in the country.

Map key:

  • Existing Co-Wheels vehicle locations are shown in dark blue
  • Planned Co-Wheels vehicle locations are shown in pink

We are interested in finding out where you would ideally like to see additional car club electric vehicles located for hire across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Please drop a pin to show us where else you would like to see car club electric vehicles located by following these instructions:
