Public EV charging

In July 2019, BCP Council declared a climate emergency, with acknowledgement that climate change is a serious risk to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s future. Since then we have been working alongside the wider community to look at how early the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole region can be made carbon neutral, ahead of the UK target of 2050.
An essential part of moving towards a zero-carbon future is decarbonising the transport sector, which would ideally be achieved by reducing car travel and achieving modal shift in favour of public transport / active travel. We recognise that this modal shift is not possible for every journey or individual, particularly in parts of the BCP Council area with limited public transport provision, and so transitioning to use of zero-emission vehicles is also important. Replacing existing petrol or diesel vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) is a key part of BCP Council’s Climate and Ecological Emergency action plan(External link) to help achieve our climate change and air quality goals. In addition, The UK Government has introduced a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars(External link) and vans from 2030 which will speed up the transition to EVs. By 2030 it is estimated that EVs could account for up to 44% of all cars and vans in the BCP Council area.
We believe that availability and access to public charge point infrastructure is a key barrier preventing people's transition to EVs, particularly for individuals without off-street parking at home. By adopting a Public Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, BCP Council is demonstrating a commitment to promote the use of electric vehicles across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole in line with the Department for Transport (DfT) Decarbonising Transport; A better, Greener Britain vision. Across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, our vision is to create a reliable and accessible public electric vehicle charging infrastructure network for residents, businesses and visitors and to contribute to making the area carbon neutral before 2050. As part of this vision, we want to ensure delivery of local charge points is carried out where they are needed.
Have Your Say
If you own, lease, drive or have an interest in electric vehicles or chargepoint infrastructure, we want to hear your views.
We are interested in finding out the scale of EV ownership and prospective ownership across the area, demand for local charge points, interest in community EV charger sharing and interest in community car club electric vehicle hire. We also want to know where you would like to see publicly available EV charge points installed and where you would like to see the electric community car club vehicles located across the conurbation. This will provide an evidence base to help develop our strategy and shape where charge points are installed in the future to help meet demand.
You can get involved by:
- Reading our strategy summary which details priorities, opportunities and actions for delivery of public EV infrastructure
- Completing our online survey(External link)
- Adding a pin to our map below for each location where you would like to see publicly available EV charge points
- Adding a pin to our map below for each location where you would like to see community car club electric vehicles located
Alternatively you can take part by requesting a paper copy of our survey at any BCP Council library(External link). If you require information in an alternative format to complete our survey (such as large print or an alternative language), please email researchandconsultation@bcpcouncil.gov.uk(External link)
The deadline for engaging with our survey and posting pins on our two maps is 11.59pm on 1 October 2023.
