Quiet Route Alder Road to Coy Pond

Over the past few years we have delivered improvements to the walking, wheeling and cycling route through Bournemouth Gardens, leading from the Square all the way up to Coy Pond Gardens, including a new crossing over Branksome Wood Road.

We now have some funding from Active Travel England to extend the route further west, to provide a good, safe alternative to driving into town from Branksome and Parkstone, or for getting to the various schools in the area including Heatherlands Primary and Bishop Aldhelm’s Primary.

We know that Yarmouth Road is quite busy and noisy and can feel unsafe to walk or cycle along, due to the amount of traffic, so this alternative “quiet route” provides another option.

In Spring/Summer 2026 we intend to install a new crossing on Alder Road, linking Recreation Road to Sheringham Road, and later in the year, another crossing on Yarmouth Road. In addition, we would like to make some further improvements for people walking, wheeling or cycling along Sheringham Road, part of Yarmouth Road, and along Bourne Valley Road to link into Coy Pond Road and Gardens.

We are aware that there are a few issues along the existing route that could make it less than ideal for some users – for example unlevel footways and some very wide side road junctions to cross. The available funding is limited, so we would like residents to help us identify the existing issues they experience in order that we can prioritise how and where to make improvements. We’ve added some initial ideas and possibilities to a plan, just to get you started and prompt some thoughts. We invite you to add your feedback and any other ideas or proposals to the map at the bottom of the page.

Next steps:

We will gather and consider all of the feedback received here, and use this to inform the designs and decide what to move ahead with.

Any aspects of the scheme that would be subject to a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) e.g. changes to speed limits or parking would then have a formal consultation stage. All of our TRO consultations are on our Highway Consultations page as well as being advertised on lampposts and in the local newspaper.
