Improve Upton House and its landscape - for people and wildlife
From "Help us create a long-term plan for Upton House to thrive"
Go to the project
Upton House is part of an important and historic park and very valuable for wildlife. The House contains an important bat roost.
The Upton House project should also aim to restore and repair structures in the gardens - greenhouses and walled garden; these are rapidly deteriorating in condition (and are covered by the listing of the building). Restore the gardens by selective replanting and improved maintenance. Maximise its value for wildlife - Upton House's important bat roost could be further enhanced. Mitigation may be required if bats are found in other parts of the building - so incorporate it into the plans from the beginning.
All these works would be very cost effective and could attract grant aid from additional sources.
Such works would increase the attractiveness of the site for visitors (and resulting income).
A mixture of income generating uses is appropriate for the House but this needs to include some public access - and needs to be integrated into the management of the historic landscape as a whole.
