20mph Neighbourhoods

To make our roads safer, we are proposing to introduce 20mph speed limits in some areas of Bournemouth. We would like to hear your views if you live, work, shop, travel or visit the proposed 20mph areas.

There are already over eighty 20mph speed limits and/or zones across the BCP area.

Evidence from our road safety data over a ten-year period showed there was on average a 40% reduction in casualty collisions in these areas.

In the time it takes a car travelling 20mph to stop, a car travelling at 30mph would still be doing 24mph upon impact. When someone is hit at 30mph, they are around five times more likely to be killed than when hit at 20mph.

In April 2024, the council approved the capital budget (not funded through Council Tax) to deliver 20mph schemes. Officers assessed the casualty data across the BCP neighbourhoods to help prioritise the areas most affected. Based on this analysis, specific streets and routes within parts of the following areas, as shown on the accompanying map, have been identified for inclusion in the proposals.

Areas included

• Area A: Moordown, Strouden Park and Townsend
• Area B: Charminster and Queens Park
• Area C: Springbourne
• Area D: Boscombe, Kings Park and Littledown

What is proposed?

Most roads within these areas will change to a 20mph speed limit. Some main roads will stay at a higher speed.

How to read the map

• White shaded areas show where the 20mph limit is proposed
• It is proposed that the roads shown in colour will stay at their current speed:

1. Pink = 30mph
2. Red = 40mph
3. Blue = 50mph

• Orange roads are already 20mph
• All roads in the white areas will become 20mph unless shown in colour.

The Wessex Way is not included in the proposals and will not be affected.
