Bournemouth Towns Fund - Boscombe projects (Phase One)

We want to know what you think about our plans for Boscombe and the surrounding area. We are consulting on the details of our masterplan for Boscombe town centre as well as a number of transport projects in the wider area.

THIS CONSULTATION HAS NOW CLOSED. Responses are being analysed and a report will be presented to the Strategic Towns Fund Board in August.

Following a consultation in 2020, BCP Council has secured almost £23 million as part of the government’s ‘Town Deal’ to turbo charge ambitious regeneration plans for Boscombe. With a focus on Boscombe and the surrounding area this external funding will unlock a significant regeneration programme made up of ten projects. From job creation, skills and training, to new homes, open spaces, transport links and world leading digital connectivity. You can read more about our Vision for the area and some of the other projects on our Towns Fund web pages.

One of the projects is to deliver a masterplan for Boscombe town centre and the delivery of this has been separated into two phases. The first will be led by the Strategic Towns Fund Board making this a project led by the community, for the community. Phase two is a separate piece of work and will be delivered at a later date by the council’s urban regeneration company – FuturePlaces.

The first phase masterplan will include proposals to revitalise the high street, providing green spaces and wider walkways, a new community centre, five retail kiosks and new housing. The work also includes six transport schemes to improve connectivity between the revitalised town centre, Pokesdown Railway Station and the seafront, creating a connected and vibrant area for residents, businesses and visitors, making journeys in and out of the area easier, safer and more attractive.

We now want to know your thoughts on the Phase 1 masterplan proposals and our local transport projects.

Boscombe Town Masterplan (Phase One)

There are five projects associated with Phase One of the Masterplan. These are:

  • New community centre
  • Around 90 new homes
  • A small park - Hawkwood Gardens
  • New walkway between Christchurch Road and Hawkwood Road with retail kiosks and outside seating
  • Retention of part of Hawkwood Road main car park

We envisage that there will be new retail kiosks on the new walkway with outside seating.

Part of the Hawkwood Road main car park will be retained and we intend to make minor changes to Hawkwood Road to accommodate a new pedestrian crossing, loading bay for the community centre and a bus stop for a new bus route planned between Pokesdown Station and Boscombe Pier.

Transport Projects

Six projects are being proposed to promote more sustainable travel around the Boscombe area:

1. Improvements outside Pokesdown station

2. A35 Pokesdown Station to Boscombe precinct (Christchurch Road)

3. New bus service Pokesdown Station, via Boscombe precinct to Boscombe Pier

4. Walking and cycling improvements - Ashley Road

5. Woodland Walk - walking, cycling and park improvements

6. Miscellaneous cycling improvements:
interventions (cycle lanes, junction improvements, etc) referenced C1 - C11 and secure cycle storage S1 - S8
